Awesome Video Game Music - Snake Eater

Ah, Metal Gear Solid. What a franchise! There is nothing else like it in the gaming world. Sure, you can try to make comparisons with games like Splinter Cell or Syphon Filter, but they don't really do it justice. Tactical Espionage Action plus MANY weird mechanics plus a WEIRD sense of humor. It's one of those franchises where you have to experience it yourself to get a true appreciation for it. Every gamer should give the games a shot, especially since Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is due out September 1st, and sounds like it will be director Hideo Kojima's last one.

The franchise has always paid homage to Hollywood action movies. Whether it's Michael Bay-style explosions, to Snake going by an alias of "Pliskin", some have been subtle nods, some not so subtle. File this under "not so subtle", but also file this under "One of (if not THE) best intro/themes in video gaming".

Here is "Snake Eater" from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater:

This is Bond, through and through. You could insert Pierce Brosnan, Sean Connery, Daniel Craig, or Adele in there and you could fool people.

Not only does this song appear in the intro, it makes an appearance during a VERY LONG ladder climbing joke, and is the song played during the final boss battle. They got their money's worth out of this song, so it helps that it's as good as it is.

By the way, "Someday you go through the rain, and someday you feed on a tree frog" cracks me up every time.

I can't wait to see what Kojima has planned for MGS5, if it is indeed his swan song, you can expect nothing short of complete absurdity.

Awesome Video Game Music - Everything From Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number

Remember the original Hotline Miami? Remember how good that soundtrack was? I do. In fact, I mentioned it in an earlier feature. Well now we have Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, and sure, people were excited to play the game, but we were more excited to hear the soundtrack. The original game set the bar pretty high, and not only did the sequel meet those expectations, I feel it easily surpassed it.

I'll let the music do the talking, here is the AMAZING soundtrack from Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, with the track list added for ease of listening. Turn up the bass and bask in it:

======================================================================

I can't stress this enough, this is the best top-to-bottom soundtrack in video games. You should play the games because they are fun, but you should have this music in your life.

The Week Ahead: 4/27/15

It's been sort of a slow couple of weeks as far as new releases go, but that doesn't mean I can't deliver video game content straight into your eye and ear holes. Here is what I have planned this week and how you can check it out:

Monday, April 27th 2015:

Hey, that's today! Keep checking the blog as I add 2 new entries into "Awesome Video Game Music". One from a game that was recently released (kinda), and one that was released years ago, but still may be one of the best intro themes of all time.

Tuesday. April 28th 2015:

Since I got my new laptop last week, I need to put it through a live stream stress test. After all, live streaming is a big reason why I bought it in the first place. So check out the twitch page (twitch.tv/jeff_mcfly) Tuesday afternoon as I live stream many console games and make sure my Alienware 17 R2 is up to the task. Games will include (but are not limited to): The Crew (Xbox One), Goat Simulator (Xbox One), MLB 15: The Show (PS4), Akiba's Trip: Undead & Undressed (PS4), and, of course, Mortal Kombat X (Xbox One). Yeah, there's going to be some weird ones.

Wednesday, April 29th 2015:

The podcast returns! Among the topics this week:

- The state of MOBA's; they are quite fun, and there are A LOT of them.

- Booted up EVE Online recently, which is bad for whatever social life I had left...

- New Guitar Hero and Black Ops III announcements/trailers.

- Thoughts on WWE Extreme Rules and Netflix's Daredevil, just to switch things up a bit.

- And MORE! Check it out Wednesday night at soundcloud.com/jeffofallgames

Thursday, April 30th 2015:

In preparation for Avengers: Age of Ultron, I will be live streaming several Marvel video games, including Marvel Ultimate Alliance, LEGO Marvel Super Heroes, and the Pinball FX2 Marvel heroes tables. May even dive into Marvel Heroes 2015 if I can remember what the hell I was doing in that game.

Friday, May 1st 2015:

It's Avengers Day! So I will be spending the day being a geek.

The Weekend:

Live Streaming may happen, and perhaps a new Let's Play series on the YouTube channel.
=======================================================================

Stay tuned here on the blog and on my Twitter account to get alerts as to when I go live and when new content is available for your enjoyment.

What I Think Of... Mortal Kombat X

If you have been following the blog recently, (and thank you for those who have), you know that my most anticipated game of the YEAR came out last week. By now, I'm sure you have been reading several reviews either on various gaming websites, Steam, etc. We all knew the game was going to be quite good, but just how good is the latest installment of my favorite fighting game franchise? Well, (A) You can listen to my hour and a half podcast over on soundcloud and hear be rave about how great it is or (B) You can read this and see how much I love it.

Here is what I think of Mortal Kombat X:

- For starters, if you want to check out my preview for the game, click HERE

- Also, if you want to listen to me ramble and rave for an hour and a half, check out the PodKast HERE.

I'll get to the story mode here in a bit and I will preface by saying there will be SPOILERS.

I'm going to break down each point I made in my preview and tell you how expectations compare with reality.

- The Roster

As I mentioned before, The roster felt like a good mix of familiar fighters and new blood. I was worried going into the game that all the child characters (Jacqui Briggs, Cassie Cage, Kung Jin, Takeda) would end up being a mash-up or too much like their parents/family (Jax, Sonya & Johnny, Kung Lao, Kenshi, respectively). This isn't necessarily the case. Sure, Cassie has a lot of Sonya-style kicks and Johnny-like green energy, but the characters still feel different. Kung Jin feels a lot more like Green Arrow from Injustice than he does his cousin, and Takeda has pretty kick-ass bladed whips (and also performs his X-Ray move in the air, just FYI).

The other new characters all play well enough and are quite diverse. In the past, when MK attempted to add many new characters, it was generally not well received. In this case, however, these all feel like they have staying power. My personal favorite new character is Erron Black, both in character design and playability. He is just a cool dude, a wild west Outworld gunslinger, and his attacks are pretty brutal, he has a VERY simple Brutality, and even though he may have some of the weaker fatalities, he is still a lot of fun and seems to be who pro players are gravitating towards.

As far as the returning characters, there is still a lot to like with them. If you were used to how certain characters played in older games, you will be able to pick them up pretty easily here. I've found a lot of success with the ninjas, Raiden, Jax and Johnny Cage.

The variations do end up playing a big part in how you play with or against certain characters. Some variations may not have the same combos as another one, some special moves will be different, etc. Cryomancer Sub-Zero is one of my go-to's and has some fun combos, while the Grandmaster version has the famous Ice Clone. Reptile's "Noxious" variant has a toxic cloud around him at all times, dealing damage over time for anyone who gets close to him, while his "Nimble" variant gives him a speed boost a la The Flash in Injustice, and so on. This gives players an opportunity to not only find a favorite character, but a favorite variation, or perhaps a favorite variation of a character they never thought they'd use.

As far as character designs go, I was pretty pleased with just about everyone. The subtle differences on the different variations of any given character is a nice touch, whether it's different arm bands, sunglasses, face tattoos, buzzsaw hats, belt skulls, whatever, it's nice to see a visual cue as to what variation you are playing.

I do have a couple problems: one being that there seems to be an overload on Special Forces, which kinda robs some characters of being distinguished. Sure, alternate costumes exist and they do help, but the 7 or so characters that I would lump in to "Team SF" (Johnny, Sonya, Cassie, Kung Jin, Takeda, Jacqui, and to an extent Jax), have primary costumes that all seem to look alike, which makes sense story-wise, but it just feels like there could have been more variations, but that's a minor gripe and I'm not too hung up on that.

What I AM hung up on is this new Johnny Cage. I may be one of the few, but I don't like the look of this Johnny. He looks like he belongs in a different game. I could see him in a game like Dead Rising, or Unreal Tournament or something. He doesn't look like the same Johnny from MK9 in an older state and I think THAT'S what bothers me. They do have the alternate "Tournament" costume from MK9 in the game but it's still the MKX character model. Not a fan, but, it's still cool to see Johnny autographing his headshot. Plus his "Here's Johnny" fatality is a really good one.

- The Modes

Your standard modes are all here but I wanted to highlight the new stuff.

- Living Towers

There are 3 constantly changing Challenge Towers, one changes per hour, one changes per day, one changes per week, these also include modifies, as well as some secret fights. The basic goal is to get a high score and unlock these modifiers to use in Kustom Kombat. This is a pretty cool idea and it's always nice to have something new every time you turn the game on.

- Faction Wars

I joined the Lin Kuei faction, so we won last week, so, you know, suck it. It is kind of cool to always have that competitive aspect to it. Though I do find the only "reward" for leveling up within your faction is unlocking "Faction Kill" fatalities, which are quick and simple fatalities. These are really nice to have if you don't have your characters fatalities memorized, you can just hold block, hit a couple directions, and end it with a Faction Kill.

- King of the Hill

So this mode isn't new but it's presented a little differently. I had said how I hoped the little avatars made a comeback, they didn't, but that's ok. This time, you get to show off your Kombat Kard, you see the players' stats, connection speed, you can chat in a different window, and you can communicate through cute MK emojis. If I want to throw out a smiling Stryker, I can (and constantly do). It's slick and it looks to help overall performance as well since the game doesn't have to worry about the game and avatars doing all sorts of crazy shit, and just focus primarily on the match. You still give respect points after the match as well.

- Test Your Luck

Again, not a new mode for MKX but is implemented much better here, as you can now take TYL online, as well as TYL towers. This was one of my favorite things about MK9 and I am glad to see it back and better here.

- The Fatalities

But also, the Brutalities. Of course, any Mortal Kombat game is going to feature gruesome/horrifying/hilarious fatalities and MKX has some of the best in the series. I would say some of my favorites include the aforementioned "Here's Johnny", Jax's "T-Wrecks", Kung Lao's buzzsaw, Kenshi's slice n' dice, Sub-Zero's bed of ice spikes, there are PLENTY more. I would say Erron Black's are on the weak side, and Cassie's primary one is pretty weak.

However, I find myself actively trying to get Brutalities because they feel so satisfying. Even the super simple ones feel really good when you pull them off. Each character has around 5 or 6 and some are real simple, like Erron Black's where you just hold "towards" during a throw to win the match, and some can get a little complicated, as some require you to be in a certain variation, some require you to be full screen, some require you to land certain things within the match, and so on. I will say, every time I hit one, I feel great, especially on the more complex ones, like Liu Kang's in-air fireball to the opponents face. BOOM!

- The Story

Again, Mortal Kombat shows the gold standard to how fighting game stories should be told. Cutscenes that go right into a fight and transition out, letting the story flow from one fight to the next, switching characters each chapter to not only play as them and allow the player to become more well-rounded, but also see the events of the story from different perspectives. It worked great in MK9, it worked great in Injustice and it works well here too.

Here is where I have one of my problems with the game though. During the story, you will go through a handful of QuickTime Events, simple button pushes during cutscenes. First of all, QTE's generally suck, and they feel really out of place here. The only way you know one is coming is when the scene goes from letterbox to full screen. Also, the only "penalty" for missing an input, is that the story plays a little different during that scene, that's it. You still get to the next story beat, so this makes these events even more irrelevant.

Also, in the story, you fight characters that aren't even in the game. Like Rain, Sindel, and Baraka. While it's nice to see how all these characters interact with each other, It still feels weird seeing the characters but not playing as them (though, rumors are coming out saying they MAY be playable later on).

Also, great scene after the initial credits, I had a little "maniacal laugh" going on. Great set-up for the next game.

- Those Micro-transactions

Ugh. You've probably read all the negativity surround all this DLC and micro-transactions. Some justified, some not so much. I will cut to the quick:

- The Kombat Pack is 4 characters and about 12 costumes, for $29.99. Kinda pricey, but it came with my Kollector's Edition, so no real problem.

- Sub-Zero Blue Steel costume: $1.99 with the proceeds going to some pro league season 1 something thing. No problem here. costume looks great, it's also just the Sub-Zero version of the Scorpion figure costume from the Kollector's Edition.

- I assume this "Story Pack" that's being teased will include the originally non-playable characters in Story Mode and will be around the same price point, if not cheaper, than the Kombat Pack. Again, no real problem here.

- Easy Fatalities, 30 pack for $4.99. WHAAAAAAAA? The mechanic is that you can spend these Easy Fatality Koins in the game to execute, well, an easy fatality. So instead of hitting down, up, left, left, or whatever to execute the fatality, you can just hold block, hit a button and boom, done. You "Kollect" these Koins (see what I did?) either in the Krypt, or buy purchasing a pack with REAL MONEY!

BOO! First of all, these Koins and the Easy Fatality system shouldn't exist. They are easy enough to pull off, and I remember a time when 1-button fatalities was a simple cheat. Those were the days.

Also, you can go through the Krypt and unlock everything the proper way, or you can spend $20 and unlock everything that way. Also boo! Sure, it's not hurting me, but it's a bad omen for the industry and it feels like a gross cash grab.

- Final Thoughts

Mortal Kombat X may very well be my favorite game in the franchise. The story is told well, the fighting feels faster, the variations add an extra layer of strategy, the online has been holding up well, all of the characters bring something to the table and are all fun to play, the action is as gory as it's ever been (also as hilarious), the replay value is off the charts, and there is SO much this game has in it that it can get overwhelming at times (in a good way). Sure, it's a little rough around the edges, but there is so much to love about Mortal Kombat X, that I can very easily look past the ugly spots and enjoy all of it's glory. It was my most anticipated game of the year for a reason, and the game absolutely delivers and exceeded even my lofty expectations.

Recapping Last Night's Live Stream Mania!

So, let's go over yesterday's Stream-a-mania, and what I did and (more importantly), what I learned. I will say, overall, it was a very enjoyable experience and I feel the the live steam bug has bit me, so expect a lot more of that in the future, especially next week with the release of Mortal Kombat X (more info on that later), and now since the doors have been open via the Elgato Game Capture Card, the live stream world is my oyster. So, here are my live stream chronicles from 4/7/15:

- For starters, this happened on my Twitch.tv page (www.twitch.tv/Jeff_McFly) because the service now works with my OBS and more people have easier access to Twitch, so I was happily surprised. Twitch will now be my main source of live streaming and hitbox will be my fall back if Twitch goes belly-up like it did during last year's Extra Life marathon stream. It was a lot of fun and I did get a lot of views and a few new follows.

- With yesterday being a test day, I know I slapped some things together and will be upgrading several things, including a new monitor, new microphone, and will be rearranging my play space, I will also be changing some audio settings since the game audio was other way too loud or not loud enough, but I feel like I have a good baseline going forward.

- The PS4 and Xbox One worked really smoothly with my system, but the Wii U gave me some delay issues that were fixed, however, I do want to work on that some more to improve picture quality. It's noted and in the works.

To the games:

- Bloodborne (PS4) -

I thought the game audio was really loud here. This was the guinea pig and the first to be played. Also, the game is really good and super frustrating (it's supposed to be), I will talk more about this on this week's podcast. Great start to the day.

- Helldivers (PS4) -

I really like this game, ran into some server issues but that totally could have been on my end. My audio was out of control here as you could hear my sexy heavy breathing, which began my need for a different mic.

- Borderlands 2 (Xbox One) -

I do enjoy the series as a whole and it plays great on the consoles. This was streamed at 30fps, making me want to up the frames.

- R.B.I. Baseball 2015 (Xbox One) -

I got to play as the Cubs and beat the Cardinals 2 out of 3 games, so that was great. Also, got into a good conversation about sports games. I like talking to people about games (obviously), and I do look at twitch chat, so feel free to chime in.

- Hyrule Warriors (Wii U) -

Once I got the settings to a playable level (problem on the Wii U end), I was able to mash the attack button a lot and show off what makes the game mashy, mindless, and an enjoyable experience.

- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U -

I was dead tired by this point, so it was a short stream, and was not working properly on the archive, but I still love that game.

==========================================================================

You can find archives for all the streams under my "Past Broadcasts" tab on my Twitch page. You can also find the videos on my YouTube page.

The week ahead:

- New podcast coming Wednesday 4/9

- Next live stream will take place after the podcast and will be me playing Final Fantasy Type-0 HD for Xbox One. This will be on Twitch

- Following the FF live stream, I will be testing out the new equipment with my SNES. Something will catch fire, I'm sure.

- If the retro testing goes well, I will be starting a regular "Flashback Friday" live stream, so stay tuned for info about that as my SNES, Dreamcast, and more, will get their turn.

Tune in to my Twitch page and help me get some delicious views and tasty follows.

The Week Ahead: 4/6/15

As the rain falls here in Des Moines, and another week begins, I figured I would sit here and plan out some events for this week. I'm used to doing "spur of the moment" things, but it wouldn't hurt to have an actual plan of attack. Especially now that I have some new tech toys to play with. So here is what you can expect from me for this week:

Monday, April 6th:

I got back into the live stream world with a 4 hour live stream on Easter (more on that later), and will be back on my hitbox page tonight as I do more of the same. I will, for sure, be playing some Injustice: Gods Among Us and will dive back into The Elder Scrolls Online - Tamriel Unlimited, and perhaps more, I have plenty of games on my PC that I need to play. The action should start around 7:30 CST, be sure to follow me on Twitter (@JeffMcFlyIA) for updates.

Tuesday, April 7th:

Another day of live streaming, this time from my CONSOLES! I purchased an Elgato Capture Card HD so I will be messing with that and testing out the new toy. While I don't have a set schedule of what I am playing and exactly when, Bloodborne will definitely be involved at some point. This will be a Tuesday Test Day, so there will be a lot of fumbling around while I find ideal settings. This will, as usual, be taking place on my hitbox.tv channel, so follow me on hitbox or Twitter to stay posted on what's going down, or, at the very least, watch me die A LOT in Bloodborne.

Wednesday, April 8th:

The return of the podcast! Took a few weeks off to go through a backlog of games, so there will be plenty to talk about this week. Topics will include: Bloodborne, MLB 15: The Show, Ziggurat, Borderlands: The Handsome Collection, Flame Over, and many more. Also, more live streaming, as the goal will be to stream as much as possible this week.

Thursday, April 9th:

Currently in the air, as I have personal plans this evening. There will at least be some funny, dumb blog post, a live stream is possible.

Friday, April 10th:

More live streaming (probably will be console stuff, quite possibly retro games), and expect a new addition to my "Let's Play" series.

In Case You Missed It:

My 4-hour Easter Live Stream is currently archived at www.hitbox.tv/drjohnnylt and will also be archived later on my YouTube channel HERE. It was divided into 4 videos and includes:

Part 1: Freestyle2: Street Basketball
Part 1.5: Mortal Kombat (stream cut out during live feed so this part is around 12 minutes)
Part 2: The rest of Mortal Kombat
Part 3: The Elder Scrolls Online - Tamriel Unlimited
 ==========================================================

That's the week ahead, or course I will be writing posts here on the blog and adding more videos to all the usual outlets. As always, follow me on Twitter for the latest info and be notified when I go live this week. It's a big week for me as I figure out how to best stream console games, in anticipation for some game coming out on the 14th.

What's Coming Up In April, 2015?

Spring has sprung and that's no foolin'! (That enough Cheese for ya?) Anyway, the blog is back after a little hiatus (life happens, you know) with a rundown of what to expect in the month of Easter. While you may not find as many big releases here as we saw last month, this month does have THE release I am most looking forward to and it is taking every ounce of my being to not pass out from excitement.....but give it time.

April 14th:

Mortal Kombat X - (PC, PS4, Xbox One)

It is happening, this is it, my most anticipated game of the year, I hope you read my preview in an earlier blog post to get caught up before..... uh oh....Yep, I'm hyperventilating....oh man....world is spinning....yep, getting dizzy....and my chest....whoo boy, fingers going numb.....MORTAL FUCKING KOMBAT!!

(passes out)

(lovely assistant places can of Surge in Jeff's hand, instantly waking him with the power of citrus)

I suppose other games are coming out too huh? Well here are some quick notes:

Quick Notes: (with the power of Citrus!)

- In case you aren't "Souled" out after playing Bloodborne (which is an awesome game), then Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin releases for PC on April 1st, and PS4/Xbox One on April 7th. This includes all the DLC as well as new item/enemy placement, and updated graphics and audio.

- Bastion comes to PS4 on April 7th, if you somehow have missed it, you owe it to yourself to give it a play.

- Xenoblade Chronicles 3D is the first game to REQUIRE the NEW Nintendo 3DS and hits stores April 10th.

- Grand Theft Auto V is coming to PC (seriously, not fooling you here, it's going to happen....I think) on MKX day (14th). This seems to finally be the day, maybe, possibly?

- Shovel Knight hits PS3, PS4 and Vita on April 21st and is a HELL of a game that you have to have to have to play.

- Do you like weird shit? Good, then (A) We can be friends and (B) Goat Simulator hits Xbox One and Xbox 360 "Sometime" this month. Play it, it's weird. I do hope the MMO mod that's currently in the PC version comes with it to consoles.
========================================================================

Those are some of the bullet points of April. Other games will enter the fray and demand your attention, announcements will be made (like that Arkham Knight PS4 bundle that looks SUPER SEXY), but for me, it begins and ends with Mortal Kombat X. In celebration of that, I will be doing some live streaming of Mortal Kombat (MK9) among other games over on my Hitbox.tv channel (hitbox.tv/drjohnnylt) and make sure to follow me on Twitter (@JeffMcFlyIA) to find out when my livestreams go up and get general 140 character thoughts from me.

Now I shall go back to passing out from pure excitement. I'm gonna need more Surge.

FIGHT!

Let's Preview: Mortal Kombat X

We are less than a month away from my most anticipated game of the year, Mortal Kombat X, for the Xbox One, PC, and PS4 (with the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions coming out later this year). If you can't tell, I am a little stoked, as in "HOLY SHIT, I CAN'T WAIT!".

So why am I so excited? What do we know so far about MKX? WHY AM I SCREAMING? These are all valid questions, so let me break down what we know about the game, why I am looking forward to it, and why the anticipation is KILLING me.

If you know me at all, you know how much I love the Mortal Kombat franchise. Sure, not every game was a smash hit, and I will do a full on retrospective in a later blog post, but for a franchise to last 23 years (and counting, hopefully) and stay not only relevant, but generate as much hype as it has for a new entry, speaks volumes to the quality of the games.

However, let's focus on the next game in the franchise, Mortal Kombat X, and cover what we know so far:

- The Story

The story will start at the end of Mortal Kombat (MK9) and will transition to 25 years after. This gives the game the opportunity to show older versions of the veteran fighters and add a variety of new characters to the mix, including a handful of characters with genetic ties to veteran fighters. So far, with what's been revealed character-wise, this seems like a really good mix of classic characters and new blood. It will be interesting to see the classic characters in older, different walks of life. I think this is necessary in the series to help flesh out these characters using a story mode that already worked like gangbusters in MK9. For instance, we go from Johnny Cage chasing Sonya Blade and making moves on her, to now having a child and a divorce together. This will help us see new sides of these characters and give us substance to the new fighters.

- The Roster (So Far)

As previously stated, the roster is a good mix of young and old fighters. This is a necessity in any fighting game. If the roster stayed the same through every iteration, it would get old fast, hell, Street Fighter adds new characters, Tekken adds new ones, Dead or Alive adds new ones, it happens all over the fighting world, and Mortal Kombat was due for some new blood. The balance with that is: are you adding new characters for the sake of new characters, or are you adding new characters with meaning behind them? The latter seems to be true here, as many characters have ties to the classics. We now have fighters like Cassie Cage, the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade, Jacqui Briggs, daughter of Jax and member of Cassie's Special Forces Unit, Kung Jin, a descendant of Kung Lao and member of  Cassie's Special Forces Unit, Takahashi Takeda, son of Kenshi, and another member of the Special Forces Unit, etc. You will, of course, get your Scorpion/Sub-Zero/Raiden fix and it's good to know there's something here for everyone.

Then of course, there was the announcement that Jason Voorhees (of Friday the 13th fame) will be a downloadable character. This is nothing new for MK, as characters like Kratos (God of War) and even Freddy Krueger (Nightmare on Elm Street) have made appearances, and I always like cross-franchise attempts. I may not use Jason a whole lot, much like I didn't use Freddy a whole lot, but it is a cool addition. Though I do look forward to seeing what kind of fatalities Jason can come up with.

A big draw with the characters is the idea of character variations. Every character will have 3 different variations which will change the move set, and change the way that character is played. For example, Scorpion's "Ninjutsu" variation gives him dual blades, the "Hellfire" version gives him emphasis on fire attacks, and the "Inferno" version gives him hellspawns to help him in battle. These variations will change up how you fight AS and AGAINST each fighter and adds an extra layer of depth.

Of course, the full roster is not yet announced, so expect even more "Oh, awesome" moments in lead-up to the release.

- The Modes

The modes currently listed are: "Story", "1 vs 1 Ranked", "King of the Hill" (hopefully using the Xbox avatars or some equivalent like they did in MK9's version), "Survivor", and "Test your Luck" (which I loved from MK9). There are 2 new modes that have me very excited and I want to dive into them more here: "Living Towers", and "Faction Wars".

"Living Towers" takes the Challenge Tower concept (the basic "fight up the ladder" arcade mode) and adds the twist that the ladder will change every hour or so. This is a bigger change than it may initially seem, since this will infinitely increase replay value, giving you a new ladder experience throughout your playtime.

"Faction Wars" seems absolutely incredible to me. When you boot up the game, you choose which faction you want to represent, you choose between the White Lotus, Lin Kuei, Brotherhood of Shadow, Black Dragon, or Special Forces. Everything you do in the game adds points towards your faction, whether it's Story Mode, Versus, Online, whatever, it all goes towards the overall rank, both within the faction and for the overall faction rank. Obviously, you get more faction points when you defeat someone online who is of a different faction, so this really pushes a team aspect to the game. For a random 24-hour period during the week-long faction war, there will be an "Invasion" from a powerful realm, so then all the factions turn their attention to the invading realm, creating uneasy (or Deadly) alliances. Ranking up and doing well within the Faction Wars will grant you rewards like faction specific fatalities.

Here is the Netherrealm Studios team talking a bit about these two modes, every time I see this I get a little more amped for this game.

The "Faction Wars" idea seems amazing and the idea of something new every time I turn the game on is something I can't wait to be a part of.

- The Fatalities

Oh my God! Holy Shit! Sure, the series is best known for gruesome, match-ending Fatalities. I will also mention here that Brutalities make their return to the franchise and look, well, Brutal. X-Ray attacks are also retained from the last game. But, Holy Hell, those Fatalities! These are not for the weak of heart, and you can tell the team who last put out Injustice: Gods Among Us which had NO fatalities, had some pent-up aggression when making Fatalities for MKX. If you have a weak stomach, don't watch this...but still watch this:

That's just SOME of them. This is a bloody mess and you may need to pause the game to compose yourself after seeing these. Awesome!

- Final Notes

This is the first Mortal Kombat game to appear on this generation of consoles, and so far, it looks fantastic. One of my favorite little touches is the living character select screen, where the character you select walks into frame, looks at your opponent, mean mugs them, and they both walk off opposite sides of the screen. It's a little touch that adds a lot to the overall immersion.

I hope this helps paint a very bloody picture as to what kind of experience we are getting with the next installment of Mortal Kombat. Personally I can not wait to start playing this. As much as I loved MK9 and as much as I love the series as a whole, the character lineup, the modes and features, the level of gore, and the fan service, is helping Mortal Kombat X look like it may end up being my favorite game in the franchise. Mortal Kombat X comes out April 14th for Xbox One, PC, and PS4, with the 360 and PS3 versions out later this year.

Now all I ask is they put Stryker in the game. Pretty pretty please?
