Let's Talk: Mario Kart 8 trailer

There was some exciting news coming out of Nintendo yesterday, which is much needed for Nintendo given its current home console situation. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy my Wii U and I love Nintendo, I just know that my Xbox One and PS4 have been used way more. It is worth noting that my 3DS has been working overtime with games like Animal Crossing, Mario Tennis, Luigi's Mansion, Fire Emblem, Pokemon X, and soon Mario Golf: World Tour.

But yesterday Nintendo gave us this and the internet BLEW UP!

I figured I would discuss a few key points here and see what the community thinks. So, Let's Talk.

- :44 Nice slippers! I gotta find me a pair of those. I'm serious.

- I think this opening little skit is PERFECT! It shows a typical Nintendo fan boy, surrounded by Nintendo Nostalgia just wishing he knew more about a title he's excited about. The casting of an adult here is crucial. Nintendo knows the main players are kids, it has been throughout its history, but appealing to those of us who grew up with the company and now still holds it close to our collective hearts shows that Nintendo is also aiming at its core fans.

- Plus we all have answered our TV's at some point and I always get a bit of a laugh watching this.

- Iwata is talking to us in his best English. I don't remember if he has EVER done that but I knew I was pleasantly surprised.

- Does anyone else just adore Iwata as much as I do? I would love to have drinks with him and Miyamoto and just pick their brains about the video game industry.

- Also, everytime I look at Iwata, I think "Man, I want another Brain Age game".

- 2:00 we see the box art. I kinda wish the case wasn't red since it REALLY clashes with the predominantly blue colors in the art itself, maybe that's just me, maybe I am just used to seeing PS3 "Greatest Hits" come in red.

- We start talking about the "Anti-Gravity" aspect which is new to Mario Kart 8. What it basically boils down to is that there will be variants in the courses that could leave you driving on the ceiling, the walls, down a waterfall, and giving you alternate routes leading to not having your wheels on the ground.

- This opens up track design immensely and you will see some CRAZY level design. Plus some classic gems.

- Plus the benefit of bumping into racers to get a boost. This changes how we have played Mario Kart and is a pretty neat idea.

- 6:56 My favorite MK game....(I should really just call it Mario Kart huh? Don't want to get it confused with something else...). I am a believer that everyone's favorite M Kart game (that works) is the first one they played. While I do have love for the GBA, DS, Wii, 3DS versions, and SOME love for the Gamecube one (I have little love for the N64 version) I played the holy hell out of the SNES one and maintain that to be the best. (Your mileage may vary).

- 7:20 is when they start showing customization options. They touched on this in the 3DS and (I Think) the Wii versions, I imagine they will go even further with it here. (Further? Farther?)

- OK doing this like a car commercial is something I find hilarious and awesome. Well done!

- Also look at how good this game looks...man....I can't wait to see it in full HD on my TV.

- 8:48 look how Koopa's eyes move to look at what's passing him. Maybe it's happened in M Kart games before, but you can't help but be impressed with that here.

- 10:53 is when we are introduced to new characters. I love the addition of the Koopalings here. They always seemed to take a backseat in the universe even though you had to get through them to get to big, bad, Bowser. Being a music guy I always found myself liking Ludwig the most.

- Then it starts getting a little weird. We have Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach. Hmm...I can kinda get Baby Rosa here. We have Baby Mario, Luigi, Peach and Daisy, so I guess why not? I don't understand PGP. I know we have Metal Mario and maybe they want to give a girl that metallic look to even things out, but I guess I don't get it. Is there a reference here I'm missing?

- 30 different racers, including your Mii. That's a lot. Just maybe would have put Dry Bones in instead of PGP. Or how bout a Goomba? I mean he is the first bad guy you ever see in a Mario game, give him his due!

- 12:36 Oh, Mario Kart 64. Yeah, next! It had good tracks which appeared in later games, but I just did not find myself having a great time playing it. Unless I am drunk at Up-Down playing it on the projector....ok who's in?

- 13:02 where we see the new items in play. This is my favorite segment in the whole show, because there are actually AWESOME new items. The boomerang flower sounds like it can do a whole lot of damage, and you can throw it up to 3. Having that item which can still do damage on the way back to you is a huge advantage. The Piranha Plant is great because not only can it knock racers out, it can eat banana traps. The Crazy 8 power up is just an expansion of the Lucky 7 power up from the M Kart 7. You'll get 8 items to use and this is usually reserved for those in the back of the pack.

- Then we see this weird looking horn in a box. This super horn will cause a quake, knocking riders in a radius away from you. It's also great for defense as it knocks red, green, and the blue shell away.

- Next up....

- Whoa....go back....the blue shell can be.....negated....you...I...the....words....OH MY GOD!!! Nintendo finally did it! When I first saw that, nothing else mattered to me. I was in shock! This could be the greatest Mario Kart game ever made.

- Ok calm down. Next up, they race karts and bikes against each other to see who is fastest. Turns out they are equally fast, the bike is better in the corners and the kart is better on the straightaways. There, move forward.

- 21:12 A LOT of time was put into my Gamecube version of Mario Kart and I liked it for the most part, just not one of my favorites.

- 21:38, the online functions are shown. Up to 12 people can jump into a race and go. Pretty simple and it will be a lot of fun to jump on and race others. You can even host your own tournaments, so I am sure this will turn into a very competitive M Kart game. Ghost data is nothing new to the series but it's still good to see that in here. Also you get stamps if you beat developer times. I think the Miiverse is a cool idea and it's always cool to see how it gets implemented in Nintendo games.

- Mario Kart TV lets you watch your highlights as well as the most popular highlights from around the world and integrates the Miiverse as well. I would've liked the ability to watch full on races/tournaments and maybe you can somewhere else.

- 25:20 Music Kart. The Music in the series is awesome and in many cases gets implemented into the actual course. Including my favorite course from M Kart 7 for 3DS with the piano keys, marimba keys and drums. Sit back and enjoy the music.

- 28:12 I'm sure I busted the 'A' button on my DS with Mario Kart DS. Great port that I got hooked on. Much like its 3DS Counter-part. (Side note: I love the 3DS).

- 28:35 we see actual gameplay at "Mario Kart Stadium". Worth mentioning again, this game looks really good!

- This is what I want out of Mario Kart TV. TV style presentation showing races or tournaments. This is exactly what I want. Get on it, Nintendo!

- Of course Mario wins, it's his game. He's the John Cena of Mario Kart. (not hating, just saying).

- Now we get to the nitty-gritty. Reggie Fils-Aime (again, I wanna get drinks with these guys) tells us about the offer to register M Kart 8 online and get a free game on top of that. You can choose between Pikmin 3, Wii Party U, New Super Mario Bros U or The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD. Flagship Nintendo franchises (and Wii Party).

- Then we get the Wii U bundle option. For $330 you get the Wii U, Mario Kart 8, a red Wiimote and red steering wheel accessory. I imagine this will be a hot seller.

- Then we get the full-on trailer which is just mean. I now have to wait till May 30th.

All in all, I am BEYOND excited to get this when it comes out and I will be online taking down fools from around world while actually BREAKING BLUE SHELLS. May 30th can't get here soon enough. Though I do have Mario Kart 7 to hold me over till then. (Man I love my 3DS!).

Also, the biggest takeaway I have with this, is that people still love and care about Mario Kart and Nintendo. That makes me very happy.

Thoughts? Let me know?
