So....what happened last weekend?

As many of you know, I took part in a 24 hour gaming marathon through Extra Life raising money for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. Things were going OK, got a few views on my twitch account, hoping for a good day of raising money.

Then something really messed up happened...

Twitch stopped responding. After clicking "Start Streaming" on my OBS, which I use to stream directly to Twitch, the site said I was offline when I was clearly live. The videos were being archived but the live portion did not work, which meant nobody could watch and any momentum I had was gone like THAT.

With some quick thinking I made an account over at Hitbox and finished out the marathon, but the lack of notice and exposure meant I was basically in space where no one could hear me....well, do anything really.

So, because of all the mishaps and lost momentum, I am announcing a follow-up date with more time to talk about it, and more time to get you interested in watching and donating towards my cause. Here are the details as they stand...

- Saturday, November 22nd, Noon to Midnight CST

- 12-hour marathon over on my Hitbox page: www.hitbox.tv/DrJohnnyLT

- Games are TBD at this point

- There is still plenty of time to donate and help sick kids here in Iowa. Go to my site and donate! www.extra-life.org/participant/jeffmcfly
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I want to give the Children's Hospital the best chance possible to receive the most support and that's why I am doing this. I hold this event very close to my heart and it means a lot to me, so I hope you can find it in your hearts to help me and the University of Iowa Children's Hospital.

The Games I am Playing for My Extra Life Charity Live Stream.

As you well know by now, I am gearing up for my 2nd year of a 24 hour live stream for charity through Extra Life. This is one of the most exciting days of the year for me and I am getting a little anxious to start playing, which is why I will most likely be running live streams this week in lead up to the big day, Saturday October 25th starting at 8:00AM CST.

With this post, I wanted to highlight each game I am planning on playing and talking about why I chose them and how I plan to deal with these games as the hours pass.

The plan is to play a game for a couple hours, then switch. That way I can keep it fresh and take frequent eat/drink/bathroom breaks. It is a marathon, not a sprint. I have 12 games lined up, with a potential 13th game for the "Bonus Hour" if I exceed my goal of $1,000.

I will also leave the info on how you can support me and cheer me on at the bottom of the post.

8:00 AM - 9:00 AM - Hearthstone

I figured I would start my day long adventure with something simple and not requiring a lot of instant reflexes. I will be shaking off the sleep at this point so I went with a game that will get me warmed up. I'll probably play some offline practice games before jumping online for a few games and probably getting destroyed, but it's still a great game to get warmed up with. Also, a game I can probably have some breakfast with while playing.

9:00 AM - 11:00 AM - Bully: Scholarship Edition

I've always had a soft spot for this game. The idea of playing as a delinquent in a boarding school with Rockstar's brand of humor thrown in was always interesting to me and with all the talks of a potential sequel, I knew I had to highlight my favorite Rockstar game not named GTA or Red Dead. (If only they put The Warriors on Steam though, man I loved that game). I'll be warmed up a bit by this point, so getting a game with a little more action in it will help wake me up (that and the cans of Surge I still have left).

11:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Burnout Paradise

I was looking for a racing game to play this year, and after considering games like Test Drive Unlimited 2 and Grid 2, I figured I would go back to an old favorite and THE BEST free-roam racing game ever: Burnout Paradise. I played this a bit last year but I am committing a couple hours here at this time slot since I will be awake and ready to make split-second decisions (also considered playing Split/Second). The crashes are going to be spectacular and the majority of the time I will be trying to smash through billboards and road signs.

1:00 PM - 3:00 PM - Tesla Effect: A Tex Murphy Adventure

At this point in the day, I will need something to come down from by Burnout rush and Tesla Effect should do the trick. I have been meaning to get to this game since I bought it and just never had the time. I had never heard of the franchise until this game was released and the idea that an FMV game can still work in 2014 is very intriguing. These kinds of games always eluded me during its heyday so it will be fun to delve into this world, especially with the voice of Tom Servo helping me out.

3:00 PM - 5:00 PM - Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

I did play a few hours of this on my Twitch page the night it was released, and I knew I wanted more time to get into it. I have always been a fan of the Borderlands series and more of that always makes me happy. The first few hours I played were fun and funny, 2 things the series is best known for. I know some people are getting burned out at this point, but I think the series is great and am not-so-secretly hoping for an actual full MMO at this point. Borderworlds just sounds too good to not be a thing. This will be the first (and only) First-Person-Shooter on the schedule and I feel this time slot works best to deal with the constant action and gun-stat-comparing that this game will throw at me.

5:00 PM - 7:00 PM - The Sims 4

Prime Time Sims! After the more mature-humored nature of Borderlands, I figured I would take a step back and go into the more friendlier world of The Sims. I am still deciding on if I want to use a Sim I have already created or make a whole new one just for this event, but it will be fun nonetheless. I will be fully awake by this point, maybe a little hungry, so both me and my Sim can take care of our basic needs. I know I can kill a few hours with this game EASILY, and the hard part will be to make sure to stop in time because....

7:00 PM - 10:00 PM - Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth

I have this game already pre-loaded and ready to go once it is unlocked on Friday, October 24th. I am sure A LOT of people are going to play this on their live streams, which I imagine is a reason why this game is being released the day before the event. If you recall, Civilization V was my 15th favorite game OF ALL TIME. The idea that Beyond Earth takes everything that was great about that game, gives it a sci-fi coat of paint, and new upgrades and mechanics, making it even MORE addictive, is all the more reason why I am giving this game the most time during the event. Consider it the main event in my main event. This will also be the halfway point and I will still be awake and alert enough to be able to know what is going on.

10:00 PM - 12:00 AM - South Park: The Stick of Truth

After those hours of serious gaming and micromanaging, I am going to need something to make me laugh, which is where Stick of Truth comes in. I'll start a new character and show off just how good this game is. Still, in my mind, one of the best games to come out in 2014, and a great way to say goodbye to Saturday and usher in Sunday morning.

12:00 AM - 2:00 AM - Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition

Getting near the time where I start fading, so I am going to play something with action while I still have my reflexes. I played the original Sleeping Dogs last year since I do love the game. The Definitive Edition brings gameplay improvements, visual improvements, and all the DLC. I'll have to mess with my video settings a bit before I get the best picture, but my video card is still pretty beefy and can handle it. I look forward to seeing this game in action.

2:00 AM - 4:00 AM - Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic

An oldie but a goodie (and #12 on my list of top games of all time). I chose KOTOR because it will be nice to go back to a game I haven't touched in years and one that I have very fond memories of. This will effectively be the time I lose whatever reflexes I had, so the slower pace of combat here and the ability to pause and assess the situation will be nice.

4:00 AM - 6:00 AM - SimCity

City building, how much more relaxing can that be? I know I will start fighting insomnia at this point, so the cities may end up looking real...interesting...but I have been meaning to give this game another shot and see what kinds of cities I can come up with.

6:00 AM - 8:00 AM - XCom: Enemy Unknown/Within

Big finish! I knew I needed something to carry me through to the end, something where I needed to make life-or-death (mostly death at this point) decisions and wipe out the alien threat. This will be interesting as I try to keep my sanity and my soldiers alive.

Bonus Hour: 8:00 AM - 9:00 AM

If I exceed my $1,000 goal by the end of the main event, I will play one more game for one more hour. While I haven't yet decided what that will be, I have a few in mind that will be a lot of fun, especially after being up all day/all night.

Awesome Video Game Music: 2 songs from Punch-Out!!

If you've been following the blog at all recently (thank you, by the way), you'll know I have been playing A LOT of the new Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS. My main fighter is, much like I predicted, Little Mac. Mac is one of my favorite characters in gaming history and I will always hold him and the entire Punch-Out!! game near and dear.

Part of the reason why that game is so iconic and well-regarded is the music. So let's look at a couple themes from Punch-Out!!.

1. Fight Theme

The song really gives you that "Eye of the Tiger" feel while you are taking down big baddies with your punches.

Of course this wouldn't be complete without an appearance from...

If that doesn't trip your nostalgia trigger.....this one will. My absolute favorite song in the game, and one of my favorite songs in gaming history (not to mention my current ringtone, sorry Killer Instinct).

2. The Jogging theme.

An iconic theme from an iconic game, with the iconic pink jogging suit. Every time I hear it I am taken back to my childhood and the hours I spent with this game. This song will still pump me up and, surprisingly enough, works really well in the gym.

Here is how it sounds in the new Smash Bros:

All of this is absolute awesome and I have no problem playing the original game, cranking up the music, or using Little Mac in Smash Bros to punch fools into next week. Turn up the music next time you go for a run, I promise it will be the most satisfying jog you've ever had. Wear a pink jogging suit for added effect and attention.

Also, this is the 100th post in the history of this blog. Hope you have enjoyed everything so far and thanks for checking this out. Here's to another 100 and beyond!

What I Think Of...Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS

The game Nintendo handheld fans have been looking forward to all year has finally been released outside of Japan, and after about 30 hours, 1000 K.O.s and several attempts to knock a sandbag into next week, I am ready to deliver my thoughts on the game that may end up setting my 3DS on fire with how long I've played it.

Up front, I will say this: There is just so much game here that I will be quick and to the point or else I will be writing this until the WiiU version comes out (which is still planned for this holiday from what I've been reading).
I'll start with addressing the concerns I had earlier when I posted THIS

- Does the small screen end up hurting the game?

Having a 3DS XL definitely is the way to go here, while it is entirely playable and enjoyable with the normal 3DS, the bigger screen makes for a more enjoyable experience and if you are buying a 3DS for this game, go big! The game does a great job outlining the characters so they stand out from the background, and put red or blue outlines around them when playing team battles so you know who is who. I've had a couple times where I didn't know where I was, but that happens for me in Smash Bros normally anyway.  Also I attribute my hand cramping ordeal to the fact that I just have big hands. Believe me, the hand cramps were a lot worse while playing Kid Icarus: Uprising.

- Will the absence of a 2nd analog stick hinder the controls?

As it turns out, it was really easy for me to adjust to the quick charge attacks without a second stick. While that will change a bit when the console version is released, I've had no problem K.O.ing fools with 'Circle Pad + A'.

- The roster is incredible...ish

I still find there is an overabundance of characters I really don't have much reverence for, like Pokèmon and Fire Emblem characters. Sure, I enjoy those respective series, but I feel like there's a little overload. Though I understand why Nintendo did it this way. There are 49 characters in this game, you will find one or two or a handful that you really like, whether you are a fan of newer Nintendo, or (like me) still know where your original NES is, there are characters for all of us.

- The reported online lag

The only "with other people" matches I have played were local matches against my coworker in the next cubicle over, with no stuttering or lag to speak of there. The full-on Online mode, according to said coworker, can be non existent at times and downright horrendous other times. Hopefully this is just due to the extreme influx of new players and something (A) Nintendo can address or (B) will get better when players start moving on to other games to play. Another problem is that when you go into the "With Friends" option online, there is no invite. So you have to hope you have friends online and join their game, or host a match and hope your friends join you. Sure, you have many ways to communicate this outside the game, but it seems real inconvenient to not have this system IN the game.

- The names of the games

....still dumb.

Alright, on to the new stuff:

- Smash Run Mode

The idea is sound, I just don't seem to enjoy it that much. The idea is that for 5 minutes you and your opponents run through a dungeon, killing enemies and collecting equipment and buffs to your stats, then competing in an ending event with those buffs. I find the dungeon part to be frustrating since you spend most of your time getting your ass handed to you by the enemies. It is quite difficult, I guess it kinda HAS to be for this to work fairly, but there are some enemies you just can't hit, including a massive helicopter-like enemy that comes out of nowhere and attacks. I do appreciate some of the random timed events to keep it fresh, but I spend most of my time getting hit or falling. Smash Bros controls work well for fighting, but not for platforming. The ending fight is pretty cool and a nice change of pace, since it either can be a traditional Smash Bros fight, or a contest to see who can race to the top or race to the finish. Some people are going to be way into this, and you do have to do this a few times to unlock various challenges, but I don't see me playing this mode as much as regular Smash.

- Challenges

Speaking of the challenges, I think this they are implemented really well here. These appeared in Brawl but I find it to be better utilized here. You go through a pretty easy panel of challenges, unlocking stages and trophies, then you unlock other panels with progressively harder challenges. These can range from "Play this mode for the first time" to "Play as this character this amount of times" and so on. This is a great incentive-based system that gets players trying all the aspects of the game and gives them that :carrot-on-a-stick".

- Classic Mode

Smash Bros for 3DS's single player mode got a bit of an overhaul from Brawl. Gone is the Subspace Emissary mode, leaving just the standard Classic Mode, where you fight several characters in succession and eventually dealing with Master Hand. This time, however, you get to choose one of 2 or 3 paths to go down, collecting coins and trophies while determining which character you will fight. Before the actual fight, a lottery-style wheel will spin, which will yield prizes like trophies, equipment, or more coins, and the amount of prizes you get is influenced by the intensity level (difficulty level) you set at the beginning. 2.0 is the standard setting, and if you want to go down to 1.0 or all the way up to 9.0, it does cost gold, and the prizes adjust with the level. It's a really neat system, and the lottery wheel gives plenty of reason to replay it over and over again.

- Global Smash Power

Along the way through your Smash career, you will be introduced to the GSP system. This is what Nintendo is using for a pseudo-leaderboard. In actuality, it's a reverse leaderboard in which the higher the number, the better you are. The number actually represents how many people you are ranked higher than. For example: right now my high score in Classic Mode is with Luigi and it is 372060 which gives me a GSP of 825224 which means my score is ranked higher than 825,223 other players. Yes, there are that many other players playing this game according to Nintendo. You get different GSP ratings for all the modes and all the characters, and it changes as more people beat or get beaten by your score. While it's a cool system, it just feels like "reverse leaderboard with an unnecessary name". Still cool to have it though.

- Other notes:

- With all the characters, Little Mac is still my go-to, even though his recovery is terrible (I may make a couple "Hero Spotlight" posts to get into what that means).

- Having a trophy shop to spend my gold on with a constantly changing inventory is a great addition.

- Being able to put your Mii in the game is awesome, especially since I have a pretty badass Abe Lincoln swordsman. Also, the ability to have custom versions of the stock fighters (adding stat changing equipment and unlocked special moves) adds even more depth, and is pretty awesome when the other Falcon Punch for Captain Falcon is a BIGGER FALCON!

- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are someone who has never been into the Super Smash series before, this isn't going to change your mind, since this is more of what the fans of the series is used to. I have been a fan throughout the series' history and I can not put this game down. Yes, the online needs work and not every new mode is a "Smashing Success" (pun very much intended and apologized for), but this version gives us fans of the series even more of what we loved and gives us a lot of reasons to get excited for the WiiU release.

If you own a 3DS, you need this in your library, if you like Nintendo, you need this in your library, if you are reading this wondering if you should get this game....well, you get the idea.

What I Think Of: Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

The Lord of the Rings is a franchise in the same realm as Star Wars with its recognition, in that if you slap the name on something, or create something in the universe, fans lose their goddamn minds. This is why there are so many video games surrounding the two franchises, and their subsequent spin-offs such as Clone Wars and The Hobbit.

The market is flooded with games from both of these beloved franchises, with varying levels of success. For every TIE Fighter, there will be a Shadows of the Empire (which may have been fine when it was new but DOES NOT hold up). So which side of the scale will Shadow of Mordor fall? Will this be a thrilling adventure like Third Age? (yes I enjoyed that game) or will it be middling like Conquest? (had its moments but felt mostly meh).

It's very easy to explain this game's mechanics by using other games to compare it to. Shadow of Mordor feels very much like a mash-up of Assassin's Creed and the Batman: Arkham series. If that sounds intriguing to you, then you have a pulse. Now, how about I mention that it does those mechanics as well, if not better, than those other titles? Yeah, now I got ya!

The story takes place between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. You play as a ranger named Talion (who is voiced by Troy Baker, dude gets work!) who's family is murdered by soldiers of Sauron. Talion is also killed, but is revived and posessed by a wraith, which grants Talion wraith-like supernatural powers to go back into Mordor (you can simply walk into Mordor if you want) and exact his revenge on Sauron. Of course, there had to be a familiar face for fans to interact with, so Gollum makes an appearance and ends up being a main story point, sharing similar interests with Talion and being very intrigued by this Wraith that possesses Talion.

OK, so let's get back to this whole Assassin's Creed/Batman mash-up I was talking about earlier. Shadow of Mordor is an open-world game in the style of those two games. Traversing the world is very similar to that in Assassin's but I find it to be even more fluid and overall better here. In AC, you would need to hold a couple buttons and find the one thing you could grab onto to get up a building. It worked, but it had its frustrations for sure. In Shadow, you hold A and up on the left stick (Xbox One, you could imagine what it is for PS4) and Talion will zoom up the side of a ledge or building. It is so simple to get around and doesn't leave you fumbling with the controls. You can also unlock an ability that gives you a speed burst after a short hop over an obstacle, or the ability to ride wild mounts in the world, all of which makes traveling the open world easy, quick, and rewarding.

How does Batman fit in? Ah yes. The game is played from a third-person perspective, and when you do your normal (simple) walk into Mordor, the camera shifts putting Talion just to the left of the screen, which is how Batman walks, you also walk faster when crouched, like Batman, but the big connection is the combat. The Batman: Arkham series is best known for its outstanding combat system, and rightfully so since it's one of, if not THE, best combat system in games. On Xbox one, X does your normal attack, Y does your counter, A dodges (and vaults over shielded enemies) B gives you a Wraith Stun, and Right Trigger and X can execute a downed enemy. It does go deeper though, Left Trigger aims your bow and arrow, even giving you a charge shot and the ability to slow down time to line up that headshot. Also, after a certain number of strikes, you can perform an execution with Y and B together to quickly finish a fight. It goes on from there but you get the idea. The fighting is very fluid and it is just as frustrating when your combo gets broken because you know you screwed up. The executions are brutally awesome and the whole system is as satisfying as it ever was.

Even with all this awesomeness, those pale in comparison to the coolest thing in the game, and one of the coolest things I have seen in ANY game: the Nemesis system.

This may be a little hard to perfectly describe, so follow my road map here; There are 5 main Orc Warchiefs, who all have several "right hand orcs", who also have Orcs working under them, who have orcs working under them, so 5 Warchiefs and 3 rows of captains in the chain of command. Your job is to thin the ranks by hunting these Orcs down and getting to the Chiefs. These captains could be anywhere on the map and each have unique strengths and weaknesses which you learn by interrogating other officers, which is useful information since some Orc captains may be invulnerable to specific attacks.

You may think that once you kill an Orc Captain, then it's just on to the next one, but oh no. Over time, new orcs will fill in the vacant space in the army, so you could be taking out orcs forever if you really wanted to. The current orcs in the army also level up over time, they will also randomly attack other captains to gain more power, so the captains are constantly moving within the army.

Oh, but it goes on. Let's say you meet your demise at the hands of a random orc in the middle of a heated battle, that no name orc suddenly has a name, gets a level boost, and becomes a captain in the army. These captains also remember what happened during the last encounter, if they've killed you before, they will mention it, if you killed them before, they may appear with scars or other disfigurements and be even more pissed off because they want revenge. There are a lot of random factors at work with this, so no two people will have the same experience. The whole system is incredible and is the reason why I haven't made it far in the story, because I just want to seek these monsters out and bring hell upon them.

Worth noting, if you get this game (and you absolutely should) get it for these newer consoles or PC, since the Nemesis system will be scaled back in the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Aside from unlocking abilities from XP, you also acquire runes by slaying orc captains, which give buffs to your sword, bow, and dagger. These runes are definitely helpful when you get into big fights, as they can increase damage or restore health.

It's very easy to get distracted in Shadow of Mordor with so much happening, which makes it a real testament to the game that all these distractions are fun and keep the game fresh throughout. The Nemesis system is an absolute leap forward in the genre and will be the reason I put tons of hours into this. I haven't even mentioned the fact that the game looks incredible, and the voice acting is top notch (Troy Baker AND Nolan North in the same game, so duh).

While I can sit here and say it's a little bit Assassin's Creed and a little bit Batman: Arkham, the fact is that Shadow of Mordor takes inspirations from those franchises, puts its own unique spin on it, and comes out one of the best games of the year and an absolute must-buy for any action game fan.

What's Coming Up in October?

Q4 2014 is upon us, which means companies are loaded and ready for the holidays. There are a lot of big releases coming out so let's get right to it and highlight a few games coming out this Halloween month:

October 3rd:

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS - (3DS)

Yes, just....yes. I have played A LOT of the demo and am really enjoying it. Some of my questions from my earlier post are being answered and I can't wait to download this at midnight. My Little Mac play is going to be stuff of legends.

October 5th:

Skylanders: Trap Team - (3DS, PS3, PS4, Wii, WiiU, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

The next game, and next line of toys, in the popular Skylanders franchise is released and guarantees to invade more of your shelves at home with their plastic awesomeness.

October 7th:

Alien: Isolation - (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

A survival-horror game following the events of the original movie. Isolation has been scaring the crap out of people at various conventions this year and may finally be a good Alien game.

NBA 2K15 - (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

It's another gorgeous looking basketball game.

October 14th:

Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel! (Mac, PC, Linux, PS3, Xbox 360)

Set between the events of Borderlands 1 and 2, The Pre-Sequel! will add more of the "shoot-and-loot" gameplay we all love. New weapons, new characters, new elements.

The Evil Within - (PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One)

One of the most terrifying (and talked about) horror games get unleashed upon the world. Perfect for Halloween, terrible for thoughts of a good night's sleep.

October 21st:

Fantasia: Music Evolved - (Xbox 360, Xbox One)

Dust off your Kinects and your Sorcerer Mickey hats and wave your hands to the beat.

October 24th:

Bayonetta 2 - (WiiU)

Hey, a WiiU sighting! The follow-up to the wildly successful Bayonetta (which is included in this WiiU package), expect a lot of Nintendo fan service in here.

Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth - (PC, Mac, Linux)

Civ with a future/sci-fi coat of paint? Already sold me on it. This is going to be great!

October 25th:

My Extra Life charity live stream!!!!

I know it's not a game, but this is a very important day for me!

I will be playing video games on my twitch stream (found HERE) and any and all donations will directly benefit the University of Iowa Children's Hospital. I NEED your help to get me to (and above) my goal of $1,000.

To donate, click THIS LINK and then click "Support Me". I will be forever grateful. Please click the link, donate, support, and feel real good about yourself. It's a win-win!

October 28th:

NBA Live 15 - (PS4, Xbox One)

Let's see what EA Sports has up their sleeve this year. This is the second year Live has been on these newer consoles, we shall see what they learned and improved on.

Sunset Overdrive - (Xbox One)

This looks like cartoony, chaotic madness and I can not wait. I've been looking forward to this game for a WHILE!

Other Quick Hits:

- Costume Quest 2 comes to every console on October 7th.
